Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme

Senior citizens who live under the poverty line will now receive non-contribution pension under the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme aka IGNOAPS. In the year 1995 the scheme was launched by the central government. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Rural Development the scheme was launched as a major part of National Social Assistance Programme. The scheme is not for everyone but as mentioned it is for the people who are unable to earn their needs to survive.

  • The scheme IGNOAPS is launched in the year 1995 by the Ministry of Rural Development. The scheme is a major part of National Social Assistance Programme.
  • Under this scheme senior citizens i.e. people who are 60 years or above will receive Rs. 200 as pension on monthly basis. On the other people who have crossed 80 years will receive Rs. 500 instead of Rs. 200 on monthly basis.
  • In this scheme the pension type will be non-contribution pension. It means the employee does not have to contribute anything to get the pension from the government.

It is a pension scheme so it is obvious that the beneficiaries must be aged above 60 years. Also according to the rules of the scheme the beneficiary has to live under the poverty line. As it is non-contributory scheme, the beneficiary does not need to contribute anything to get the pension.

Under this scheme senior citizens, above 60 years but less than 80 years will get Rs. 200 on monthly basis. Those who have crossed 80 years will receive Rs. 500 on monthly basis as non-contribution pension to survive.

Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme Implementation

The implementation of the scheme will be done by the NSAP. According to the national social assistance programme the system has an online database for all the beneficiaries who are registered under the scheme. With this registration the NSAP will be able to track all the pensioners and the amount can be transferred directly to their accounts. The beneficiary can have any commercial bank accounts, post office accounts or Jan Dhan Yojana account to register under this scheme. But they must have a bank account so that through online transfer the money can be transferred to their accounts easily.

  • The NSAP monitored and supervised the process of registration and pension amount disbursement. In NSAP annual verification and also social auditing have been introduced to monitor the process more accurately. The last date of annual verification is 30th June and social audit is 30th
  • The National Level Monitors will be hired by the NSAP officials. They will visit the states and districts every month to look after the process and verifications. They will meet the local officials, state level and district level supervisors and such officials to make sure that the process is going fine.
